From the Counselor

Dear Blakely Community,

We hope everyone had a restful Mid-Winter Break and is feeling rejuvenated as we leap into March and soon, spring!

In March, we will focus on the character trait of CREATIVITY. With Maker Faire taking place this month, aligning with this character trait seemed only fitting! Creativity is the ability to use our imagination, think in new and original ways, solve problems, and express ideas with confidence. While it is often connected to subjects like art and music, creativity is also present in how students approach math, writing, science, and everyday challenges. It helps students become flexible thinkers who are willing to learn from mistakes and try new strategies.

Students will participate in classroom discussions, brainstorming activities, and collaborative challenges (like Maker Faire) that encourage “outside-the-box” thinking. We will emphasize that creativity involves taking safe risks, persevering through setbacks, and understanding that mistakes are part of the learning process. As a school community, we will celebrate examples of original thinking and creative effort.

Families can support this focus at home by encouraging open-ended play, asking thoughtful questions such as “What else could we try?” and providing space for experimentation without focusing on perfection. When our children know their ideas are valued, they build confidence, resilience, and strong problem-solving skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.

In addition, we know that easing back into school routines after a break can take time. Breaks are important for rest and family connection, and it’s normal for students to need a few days to readjust to schedules, expectations, and early mornings. Reestablishing consistent bedtime and morning routines and reviewing school expectations with gentle encouragement can help make this transition smoother and ensure students quickly find their rhythm again!

With care,

Attendance Update - I Belong Here

This February, our attendance focus is “I Belong Here,” as part of our Show Up & Show Out campaign. We’re highlighting how caring relationships with teachers and staff help young students feel welcomed, connected, and supported at school.

Small, everyday moments—like greeting students by name, checking in after an absence, and offering encouragement—help children feel safe and valued. When students feel they belong, they are more likely to enjoy school, show up each day, and engage in learning.

A strong sense of belonging supports academic success and student well-being. At BISD, EVERY student and EVERY family are valued. Together, we can create warm, welcoming school communities where every child knows they matter—and that we are better when they are here.

Congratulations Blakely - 93% of students have attended 90% of the school year!
