From the Counselor

As we wrap up each school year, kindergarten and third-grade whole-class counseling lessons are focused on personal safety. These age-appropriate lessons are delivered annually toward the end of May and June using our Second Step Child Protection Curriculum. The purpose of this programming is to empower students with the knowledge and tools to recognize unsafe situations, set healthy boundaries, and ask a trusted adult for support when needed. I encourage you to continue these conversations at home and ask your child about what they have learned!

Additionally, while summer is always an exciting time of year, without the structure and routine of school, some kids may feel a bit off-balance and/or miss daily connections with friends and school staff. Below are a few simple ideas to carry into summer as ways to maintain some consistency and structure. Then I’ve provided a short list of free, local resources for summer fun!

  • Keep a routine: while summer should be relaxing, a basic daily rhythm can help kids feel secure.
  • Plan connection time: prioritize family meals, screen-free outdoor time, or short daily check-ins.
  • Encourage expression: support your child by helping them move through and express their feelings by taking deep breaths, using a safe space for processing, providing access to regulating tools that work for them (drawing, listening to music, movement, etc.), and encouraging them to use their words to express how they feel when they are ready.
  • Promote movement: physical activity, such as biking, dancing, or walking in nature, can boost mood and focus.
  • Find balance: balance digital entertainment with real-world play and face-to-face connection.
  • Model self-care: show your child what it looks like to rest, reflect, and recharge.
Free Local Summer Resources:

Wishing your family a balanced summer full of both rest and joy! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any additional support or resources as we bring our 2025-2026 school year to a close. I look forward to seeing you all again in the fall!

Important Library Update

Help us return all the books to the library.

  • THURSDAY, MAY 28: Last day for students to check out materials
  • TUESDAY, JUNE 9: All student items due

Notices of student checked out/missing items will be sent to family emails beginning Monday, May 31. Lists will also be given to classroom teachers.

If your student has a checked-out/missing item, you can:
  • Return the book
  • Pay the fine
  • Buy the book in hardcover and bring to library

The KRL Summer Learning Program begins June 1st. This is a fun way to keep your student reading during the summer!.

Health Room

From the Health Room

MEDICATION PICK UP: Medications can be picked up at the end of the school day on Tuesday, June 16th, 2026, or earlier if needed.

Health Care Plans / 504's: Please remember, if you were unable to sign and return your child’s 504/Health Care Plan to me prior to June 10th, 2026, then you will need to ensure it is filled out and signed by your pediatrician over the summer. I will need to have these turned into me by August 26th, 2026, in order to process them and notify all teachers and staff, from food service to bus drivers, of your child’s health condition. Medications can either be brought at that time or on the first day of school.

Per Washington State law, if your child has a health condition that requires emergency medication, your child CAN NOT start school without a current 504/ Health Care Plan and medication in place by the first day of school. Please contact me if you have questions.

Join the BISD Instructional Technology Advisory Council

BISD is forming a Instructional Technology Advisory Council to help guide thoughtful conversations and recommendations around the intentional use of technology in our classrooms and schools.

This committee will bring together staff, families, and community members to explore how technology can best support teaching, learning, student well-being, and balanced classroom experiences.

If you are interested in helping shape future conversations and decisions around educational technology in BISD, we encourage you to apply and be part of this important work.

Applications are due on Friday, June 5th.
