FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Blakely Families,

A huge thank you to the Blakely PTO and community for staff appreciation week. The Blakely staff couldn’t have felt more appreciated by all the wonderful treats, lunch and kind gestures. We are so fortunate to have a culture and community that supports each other. Thank you!

It is a busy week for sure, but honestly the rest of the year will be busy too! This week we have our 1st and 2nd grade music performances, as well as Bike to School on Friday. Fourth grade will be finishing up the SBA and then third grade will be starting. Outdoor Education is right around the corner and then June will be here!

Once again, thank you to families, staff and students for making Blakely a special place.

Warm regards,

Reese Ande

MUSIC CONCERT

BIKE/WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

Walk and Bike to School Day is this Friday, May 17th

Blakely will be celebrating its Walk and Bike to School Day on Friday, May 17th!  Join other families in celebrating the beautiful weather and practicing alternative ways to get to school that promote health and help the environment. So get outside, get out of your car, and get your kids off the bus for the day!

Join us in one of three ways!

  1. Bike train from Lynnwood Center, meeting at the Walt’s parking lot at 7:10. We will go up Oddfellows and then Blakely Harbor Rd to get to school (see map).

  2.  Bike train from IslandWood for the younger or new-to-riding students.  Meet in the gravel parking lot on the left when you come in.  Students will bike from IslandWood to Blakely. Meet at 7:30.

  3. Hike to Blakely. Meet at the Old Mill Trail head on Old Mill Road and hike the trail to school! Meet at 7:10.

  4. Volunteer to support the event here. We need lots of adults to help make this event fun and safe!

To ensure that all bikers are safe, we request that a parent or trusted adult rides or walks with your student in the bike or walk train.  If you can’t take your child, you can get support from another parent or trusted adult who may already be riding.  Please contact Brenda Hodges-Howell bhodgeshowell@gmail.com or 206-940-5309 with any questions or if you need help finding an adult to ride with your child.

The bike trains will NOT return at the end of the day.  So please remember that if you biked your child to school, you’ll need to bike them home or connect with another adult who can be responsible for your child. Be sure your child knows their plan to get home at the end of the day, and all transportation changes are communicated to the Blakely front office.

Finally, be sure to give your kiddo’s bike a safety check before the day of the ride: Check brakes, tires, and gears. Classic Cycles has used trade-in bikes and they are able to pump up tires and check helmets for right fit.

Looking forward to seeing walkers and riders out on May 17th!

COMMUNICATIONS SURVEY

Last year, BISD underwent a communications audit, which included a survey. This was an incredibly valuable tool, provided insight and helped set communication goals to improve our practices. It is time again to evaluate what is working and how we can improve.
Please take the survey that best fits you:
- Parent/Guardian Survey
Community Member Survey

You are not asked to provide your name/email address and your responses will remain anonymous. Your honest feedback helps shape the focus for next year (and beyond). The survey should only take a few minutes to complete and will close on Friday, May 24.

Thank you!

BISD FARM TO SCHOOL ACTION PLAN INPUT SURVEY

BISD has been selected to participate in a year-long professional learning opportunity called the Farm to School Institute. As a part of this a team from the BISD community (teaching and food and nutrition staff, administrators, community members) will be attending a 3-day intensive in July. At this intensive the team will develop a farm to school action plan for BISD. We want YOUR input to help inform the development of this action plan. We will follow the "3 C's" (Community, Classroom, Cafeteria) farm to school model for planning, which you will see reflected in our questions below.  We welcome input from all BISD staff, families and community members.  Please complete the survey below by June 7th to share ideas and feedback. Thank you for sharing your input about the BISD farm to school program!
